Before Attending an Anime or Game Business Event in Japan: Five Preparations
Events such as Tokyo Game Show and AnimeJapan can help overseas companies connect with Japan’s anime and game industries, but attendance alone does not create a business deal. This is an evergreen preparation checklist for business development teams, not a statement of any event’s current dates, prices or admission rules. Always confirm the latest information with the organizer.
1. Define a decision-ready meeting objective
“Meet Japanese IP companies” is too broad. State whether you seek a license, co-development, voice actor casting, merchandise, or an event partner. Explain what your company contributes, such as funding, production, distribution or marketing.
2. Verify admission and travel requirements
Some events distinguish business and public days. Check eligibility, registration deadlines, meeting-booking options, companion registrations, interpretation and travel documentation. Visa requirements vary by nationality, residence and purpose of travel; organizer assistance may not be available to everyone. Follow the latest guidance from the relevant Japanese diplomatic mission.
3. Prioritize potential counterparts
Group prospects into rights holders and publishers, studios and developers, and event or distribution partners. For each, identify its relevant work, the possible deal structure and a contact channel. Do not assume an exhibitor contact has decision-making authority.
4. Prepare a bilingual one-page meeting brief
Include your goal, what you offer, what you need from the counterpart, target market and timing, budget approach, information-sharing limits and proposed next decision. Clearly label uncertain terms as proposals, not agreed commitments. Keep confidential IP materials separate from the public version.
5. Design follow-up before you travel
Record agreed points, open questions, owners and deadlines after each meeting. Track next meetings, document requests and substantive discussions rather than counting business cards. Do not distribute non-public IP information without the appropriate agreement.
Pre-event checklist
- One-sentence objective and value proposition
- Official admission, registration and travel checks
- Prioritized counterpart list and contact owners
- Bilingual one-page brief and disclosure boundaries
- Named follow-up owner and next action
