Before Your First Anime or Game Project Meeting: Five NDA and Information-Sharing Checks
Early discussions about an anime, game, voice-actor or event project may involve unreleased titles, budgets and creative materials. The goal is to share enough to assess a collaboration without disclosing more than necessary. These are practical preparation points, not legal conclusions.
These are general project-planning questions, not legal advice. Obtain qualified advice for specific contract and rights questions.
1. Define the purpose of disclosure
Write down whether the meeting is for feasibility, an initial estimate or detailed production planning. Start with a short brief and share sensitive details only when needed.
2. Classify materials before sharing
Separate public information from unreleased concepts, negotiation details, performer candidates and budgets. Record the document version, recipient and date.
3. Check the parties and intended use
For a proposed NDA, prepare questions about the contracting entities, permitted purpose, covered information, exceptions and onward disclosure. Have qualified counsel review the terms for the specific transaction.
4. Plan access for collaborators
Identify which studios, translators or agencies actually need access. Agree how files may be forwarded, copied, stored and returned.
5. Plan the end of the discussion
Agree on a contact person, when further materials may be shared, and how files will be retained, returned or deleted if discussions end.
Checklist for the first discussion
- Is the meeting objective clear?
- Have recipients and intended uses been identified?
- Will any third party need access?
- Have versions, storage and return arrangements been recorded?
- Has legal review been assigned where necessary?
