A Famous Anime IP Is Not a Shopping-Mall Strategy
For shopping centers and event venues, choosing a popular anime or game title is not the first decision. The first question is what fans will travel to experience, explore inside the venue and choose to buy. FounderBank works across entertainment concepts, voice-actor casting and event/merchandise planning; this article provides a hypothetical planning model, not evidence of a completed campaign.
Three different venue objectives
- VISIT: A distinctive experience worth the trip. Possible measures include registrations, attendance and first-time visitors.
- EXPLORE: A reason to move between participating shops. Consider the route, participating tenants and engagement.
- BUY: Merchandise with a clear fan proposition. Evaluate gross margin, production costs and unsold inventory—not sales alone.
A hypothetical pop-up and voice-actor talk
Imagine a weekend pop-up with a venue-wide activity and a guest talk. No actual IP, venue, guest or license is committed. The fan gains a unique experience; the venue tests visits and circulation; the rights holder reviews brand fit and materials; and the talent team evaluates time, travel, recording and promotional use. The model should work for all parties before any public announcement.
Start with a cost-allocation model
A simplified planning equation is: project contribution = merchandise gross margin + agreed food/retail revenue share + confirmed sponsorship − IP-related costs − production − talent and operations − venue costs. This is illustrative, not a financial forecast. Licensing fees, royalties, minimum guarantees and approval schedules depend on each agreement. Do not count unapproved sponsorship or venue support as confirmed revenue.
Rights before publicity
List each intended use separately: title, character art, logo, merchandise, displays, advertising, guest likeness, recording and streaming. Check territory, duration, medium and approval responsibilities with the relevant rights holders. Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs provides guidance on finding rights-management contacts, while INPIT explains that characters may also be protected through trademarks. See Japan’s government guide (2026) and INPIT’s FAQ.
