Before You Consider Crowdfunding for a Game or Anime Project: 5 Preparations for the Companies Behind It

Crowdfunding is one way companies fund a new game or anime project. But if too many decisions are left until after launch, costs get overlooked and rewards become hard to deliver. This article summarizes five points to organize before you launch.

The materials referenced are Kickstarter's general guidance for creators and an excerpt from a Japanese-language manual written for organizations in another field. They do not show success rates or market norms specific to games or anime. This is not legal or investment advice; check each platform's terms and fees, and the laws that apply to you, before launching.

1. Confirm the type and the funding model first

The Japanese manual describes crowdfunding as reward-based (purchase-type), donation-based, or investment-type (loan, equity and fund). In the reward-based model, backers support a project to receive goods or services; in the donation model they expect no return. Investment-type models aim at financial returns and are not covered here.

Also check how the goal works. The manual introduces "All or Nothing," where funds are received only if the goal is met within the period, and "All In," where the project proceeds as long as it receives support. It notes that with All In you must promise to hold the event or provide the rewards, and cover any shortfall yourself. Which model you use changes how you plan the money.

Write down at this stage

  • Whether the project is closer to reward-based or donation-based.
  • What you will do if the goal is missed: scale down, or postpone.
  • The terms, fees and supported regions of the platforms you are considering (check each service's current information).

2. Estimate total cost instead of working backward from a target amount

Kickstarter's guidance recommends estimating all costs, including prototyping, production and shipping, and setting the funding goal from that estimate. A separate Kickstarter article (dated October 2, 2022) lists budget areas: project creation, production, shipping, marketing, your own time, contingency and fees. It says shipping is often underestimated, that international shipping can threaten profitability, and that shipping costs must be included in the goal.

The same article says platform and payment fees together should come to 8 to 9 percent of funds raised, suggests budgeting 10 percent to be safe, and adds a 10 percent contingency. These are one author's example from 2022, not current rates or any service's terms; confirm actual fees with the service you use.

  • For a game, include the steps needed before rewards can be delivered, such as development, voice recording, localization and platform support.
  • For anime, decide which production stages this funding will cover and write them out (a general organizing point, not drawn from the sources).
  • Get quotes from outside studios and performers before putting numbers in the budget.

3. Design rewards starting from what you can deliver

Kickstarter's guidance recommends defining reward tiers and thinking about what appeals to your community. What matters is whether you can reliably provide the rewards after the money comes in. The Japanese manual likewise warns that failing to deliver rewards or activities can affect trust.

  • For digital items, goods and event invitations, decide who handles production and shipping, and when.
  • Rewards that use titles, characters, voices or footage should be checked against what the rights holders have permitted (a general organizing point).
  • If a voice actor's or creator's participation would be a reward, do not put it in backer-facing text before they and their representatives have agreed (a general organizing point).

4. Gather your first supporters before launch

The Japanese manual says preparation decides the outcome, and that it matters to gather likely supporters before launch so support arrives right after it opens. It adds that mass posts on social media or email are not enough and that asking people individually is effective. Kickstarter's guidance also suggests having friends and family review a draft with the preview tool and listing the community members you will share the project with.

For a company, it helps to decide before launch who will be contacted and when: internal and external stakeholders, existing fans and business partners. None of the materials guarantees that these steps will reach a goal.

5. Decide what happens if the goal is missed or delivery slips

The Japanese manual lists, as risks, that some sites keep showing campaigns that missed their goals, and that failing to deliver can hurt trust. Kickstarter's guidance recommends making the project page honest and clear.

  • Agree internally, before launch, on a plan if the goal is missed: scale down and retry, look for other funding, or stop.
  • Decide who updates backers, and how often, if production is delayed.
  • Decide who makes the final call.

If you consult FounderBank

FounderBank's website lists, as one of its business pillars, "funding and sponsor acquisition," supporting projects through crowdfunding, sponsor outreach and investor matching. The points above are general organization and do not promise fundraising results, introductions to any specific investor or sponsor, or the participation of any particular person. It helps if you can share the project outline, current stage of development, target market, desired timing, a rough budget and the decision maker.
