Before You Cast a Voice Actor in Advertising or Promotion: 5 Points for Corporate Clients

For advertising, campaigns, and in-store promotions involving voice actors, it helps to define the purpose and conditions first. Before deciding who to ask, there are several conditions worth settling first. This article applies general checkpoints for casting talent in advertising to voice actor casting. The sources we reviewed cover talent in general; they do not describe voice-actor-specific practices or rates. Please confirm the details of each project with the parties involved.

1. Decide what to say and whom to reach

An advertising agency's casting guide (Source 1) says candidates should be judged not by name recognition or personal taste, but by whether the person's public image helps people recall the product, how much trust and reach they have with the target audience, and how well their fan base fits the product. It also lists a check on whether only the person's impression remains while the product name is forgotten. The same thinking can be applied to voice actors: settling the purpose and the message first keeps candidate selection consistent (this is our general restatement of the source). Compliance with advertising rules should be checked at this stage as well.

2. Define the scope: media, term, territory, and secondary use

Usage scope is a common source of trouble later. Source 1 lists these points:

  • Media: web advertising only, or also TV, in-store, and print.
  • Term: the length of the contract, such as 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year.
  • Territory: domestic only, specific regions, or including overseas distribution.
  • Secondary use: whether the right to reuse well-performing material later, for example in web ads, is secured in the initial contract.
  • Extra fees or a new contract when additional media are used.
  • The procedure for removing and retrieving published material when the contract ends.

Using material outside the contracted scope can lead to penalties, according to the same source. Companies planning overseas campaigns should confirm how territory is handled from the start.

3. Check exclusivity and image-damage clauses

An explanatory article answered by a lawyer (Source 2, published July 2024) says that the core obligation of talent in an advertising contract is to appear in the advertisement, and that appearing generally completes performance. It then explains that the duty not to damage the image of the product or company is an ancillary duty that needs to be written into the contract, that a penalty clause for scandals should be included, and that a promise not to appear in competitors' ads during the broadcast period should be written down rather than left to custom. It also names damages for breach as part of its conclusion.

Whether similar clauses can be placed in a voice actor engagement depends on negotiation with the agency and the nature of the project. This article is not legal advice. Please have contract wording reviewed by your legal team or a lawyer.

4. Break the budget into components

Source 1 lists these cost components: performance and contract fees, casting and direction fees, shooting and production costs, and advertising spend timed to the exposure. It also notes that the wider the rights, the higher the fee, so budget and scope need to be balanced. Because terms can change with the media and period of use, fix the scope before looking for a price guide. This article does not state specific amounts.

5. Plan the schedule, the landing point, and how to measure results

Source 1 recommends aligning the exposure period with the budget for branded search advertising, and preparing a landing point, such as search ads or a mobile landing page, before exposure begins. As ways to measure results, it gives the increase in searches for the brand name or chosen keywords compared with before the campaign, and traffic seen in tools such as GA4. The time needed for shooting, production, and negotiation with an agency varies by project, so work backward from the release date and leave margin.

What you can discuss with FounderBank

On FounderBank's voice actor casting page (Source 3), the topics listed are voice actor casting for games and anime, the use of voice actors in corporate advertising and promotion, voice actor appearances at in-store events, and planning and running projects that feature voice actors. The process is as follows.

  • Send your project details and preferred timing through the contact form.
  • FounderBank hears your goals and conditions and organizes how to proceed.
  • FounderBank explains the scope of support and costs, and candidate selection and negotiation start after agreement.

You can consult even if the performer is undecided or the plan is not final, sharing what you know. Useful information includes the project details, preferred timing, purpose, budget, implementation period, and appearance conditions. The page states that a requested voice actor may be difficult to book depending on agency policy, schedule, or the work, and that alternative candidates can be discussed in that case. Company names and performer names may be partly withheld because of confidentiality. Nothing on the page is a guarantee of a specific appearance or result. Inquiries in English are accepted.
