Before You Propose an Anime or Game IP Collaboration: 5 Points for Companies to Sort Out
Collaborations that use anime or game characters are sometimes considered as a way to widen the reach of a brand, a venue or an event. Without some preparation, however, discussions with the rights holder can stall. Based on publicly available materials, this article lists five points for companies considering a collaboration with Japanese anime or game IP. It is a general overview, not legal advice; please consult a qualified professional for individual cases, including contract review.
1. Put the fit between the work and your brand into words
AdverTimes. (Sendenkaigi), a Japanese advertising trade publication, wrote in November 2020 that in character collaborations it is important to choose a character that fits the philosophy, image and target audience of the product or brand, and to build communication that suits the character’s world and story. It also warned that ignoring this fit may provoke a negative reaction from both the brand’s users and the character’s fans. We could confirm only the freely available part of that article; the rest is for members. At the start of your proposal, explain why you chose this work and which of your values it connects to, so that the other side can understand your intent more easily.
2. Decide your goals and how you will judge results
The shape of a collaboration changes with its goal: driving visits, raising awareness, selling products, or creating touchpoints with overseas fans. If you have several goals, rank them and decide in advance what counts as success. If you set numerical targets, base them on your own results and plans rather than applying figures from other companies’ cases.
3. Write down the scope you want to use
Keiyaku Watch (operated by LegalOn Technologies, dated June 3, 2025, with a note that its legal discussion is based on the law at the original writing date of May 23, 2022), which explains character licensing agreements, lists clearly defining the permitted acts, the situations of use, the territory and the term as parts of the scope of permission. Whether the permission is exclusive or non-exclusive is also described as a negotiation point. Even at the proposal stage, sorting out the following points makes the discussion more concrete.
- The media and uses you want (in stores, on the web, merchandise, event venues, and so on)
- The territory and the period
- Whether you want exclusivity
- Whether you need sublicensing, such as letting affiliated companies use the character
4. Confirm how materials are handled and how approval works
The same article gives examples of obligations on the licensee side: using only the images provided, not altering them without permission, and displaying the rights notice in the specified way. Approval procedures, timelines and required submissions differ by project and by rights holder. It is therefore realistic to leave room in your schedule and to ask the rights holder’s contact early on what needs to be checked, when, and by whom.
5. Design the experience from the fans’ point of view
The impression a collaboration makes depends greatly on whether fans of the work can join in naturally. At the planning stage, imagine what fans look forward to and in what situations they can take part without strain. This point is not based on a specific source; it is a practical organization of ideas.
