Anime and Game Event Music: One JASRAC Application May Not Cover Every Use
Imagine a voice-actor fan event: a theme song plays as the show opens, the stage is filmed, and highlights are later streamed to international fans. It feels like one fan experience, but the organizer may be dealing with several different uses of music. Buying a recording or arranging an on-site performance license should not be assumed to clear every video, streaming or sound-recording use.
1. Music played at the venue
JASRAC provides procedures for performance use of works it manages at concerts and events, including the J-OPUS online system and paper applications. List the songs, usage scenarios, organizer, venue and admission conditions, then consult the official event procedure self-check. Do not assume that free admission or a venue’s general BGM arrangement automatically covers a particular stage event.
2. Music in video, livestreams and archives
JASRAC’s event guidance directs users to separate information for internet distribution, video screenings and recorded products. A song played in the room and the same song included in a promotional clip or paid archive may require different checks. Define whether you will livestream, retain an archive, show recorded footage, and distribute content internationally before filming.
3. Rights in the sound recording
Rights relating to the composition are not identical to rights in a commercially released recording. Depending on the intended use, additional permissions involving record producers, performers or other rightsholders may be relevant. Consider alternative audio, a newly commissioned recording or an edit without the original soundtrack when planning production, subject to appropriate rights checks.
A one-page music-use brief for event teams
FounderBank suggests documenting six fields before approaching rightsholders: song and recording; venue use; video and archive plans; territory and duration; responsible parties and contacts; and an alternative plan with a decision deadline. For example, a hypothetical event may play a song briefly at opening while leaving overseas archive rights undecided. That uncertainty should be explicit, not advertised as approved.
The goal is to align creative direction, casting, production, sponsor deliverables and distribution before changes become expensive. A practical workflow is to list intended uses, separate permission routes, confirm terms with the relevant parties, finalize the creative and distribution scope, and brief the stage and video teams.
FounderBank can discuss the planning and production structure for voice-actor, anime and game events. We cannot guarantee music permissions or provide legal determinations. To discuss a proposed event, send the location, talent concept, planned music and streaming uses, schedule and budget through our contact form (Japanese-language form).
